Choice of modality

• In adults:

• CT of the abdomen and pelvis is generally the first investigation of choice, with a general screening with particular focus on tumors and cysts.
• Ultrasonography of the abdomen and pelvis can be considered in at least younger adults when a palpable mass is believed to originate from a certain organ or in the abdominal wall.

• In children:

• Ultrasonography of the abdomen and pelvis is generally the investigation of choice.
• Nuclear scintigraphy, CT and MRI are used for malignant or complicated cases.
